Uber ignores California’s call to ground self-driving Volvo XC90 tests

Uber hasn’t even completed a week of live testing of its fleet of completely-autonomous Volvo XC90s and they’re already in deep doo-doo.

What’s going on?

Uber made headlines by releasing its first wave of fully autonomous Volvo XC90s in San Francisco for a series of real-world trials. It has not been a whole week since the machines started testing, and they are already causing problems.

Due to a clear video showing that the Uber XC90 is still problematic and a security risk, the California Attorney General’s office has threatened legal action if Uber does not ground the fleet.

The letter was sent later on Friday, demanding that Uber apply for the appropriate permissions to continue testing its XC90. Permits must be granted by the Department of Vehicles.

However, Uber challenged these claims, arguing that his cars are equipped with technology that is no different from the equipment used in other modern driver assistance systems. As a result, the XC90 fleet does not need these permissions to continue testing.

But Momma California says otherwise…

In accordance with Section 38750 of the California Vehicle Code, DMV amended the new legislature governing the testing and public use of autonomous cars on public roads in California. Due to these clear statues, the DMV issued a letter of termination and abandonment by Uber on December 14 in accordance with this code.
