Like the turbocharger and dual-clutch transmission, active suspension is a super car technology that eventually reached more and more “normal” cars. General Motors’ Magnetic Ride Control System, often referred to simply as the Magne Ride, appears to be one of the best-regarded systems out there. In addition to the variety of applications in GM’s catalogue, they have licensed the technology to Ford Mustangs, various European luxury cars, and even Ferrari.

Unlike other adjustable or active suspension options, the beauty of magnetic suspension controls is that there are very few moving parts. Air suspensions have rubber springs that can dry out and break over time and stress, and other adjustable shocks have tiny valves that can wear out after thousands of miles of continuous movement. The sponge is a standard mono tube sponge body, but the fluid inside contains iron filings. There are two electromagnets in each discharge; One at each end. When activated, the fluid thickens, making the shocks stiffer for less body roll and faster handling response. Turn off the electromagnet, the liquid becomes thinner and the ride is smoother. The electromagnets themselves are controlled by a central computer that reads speed, steering angle and many other parameters every millisecond to estimate the exact stiffness required during travel.
