Signs of Turbocharger Failure

Turbocharger Failure Symptom Sign

Do you know the symptoms of a turbo malfunction? If your turbocharger is going bad or looks like it needs to be fixed or replaced, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Acceleration problem

Since prime power is one of the main functions of the turbocharger, keep a close eye on the accelerator pedal. From a delayed response to exhaust gases to actuate the turbine blades, to problems with the turbine blades, a “lag” in acceleration can indicate problems with the turbo. Slow acceleration can soon turn into almost no acceleration; If the turbo blades are stuck in neutral, they will actually block the required air flow into the engine’s cylinders.

Check Burnt Oil

Another sign of turbocharger failure is burnt oil. Locate the downspout, usually on the front of your turbocharger. Disconnect the downspout and use the endoscope to look inside the actual turbine. If the turbine shows signs of oil, it is very likely that the turbine piston ring is not sealed properly. Oil in the turbine is a sign of gradual failure; If left untreated, your turbocharger will eventually fail.

Irregular or Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Relative to the above diagnosis, exhaust smoke can be a sign of turbo failure. What are the common culprits for turbo problems that cause exhaust fumes? Worn internal seals and external cracks in the turbo casing, just to name a few. Note that exhaust fumes can also mean a bad head gasket, so a thorough inspection of the engine is essential.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to serious internal engine problems. And one of those “serious internal problems” could be the turbocharger. If not, take your car to your local mechanic for diagnosis. If the check engine light comes on, have it checked as soon as possible.

Crackling Noise

A faulty turbocharger can cause a loud squeak when boost is operating. The noise comes directly from the engine and sounds like a siren, which usually gets louder as the problem gets worse. Any of the above symptoms abnormal noise could be a turbo failure.

How to Repair Turbocharger Failure

Now that you know the signs of turbocharger failure, let us show you some ways in which you can bring your turbo back to its former glory. Here are two possible solutions:

1. Clean or replace turbocharger supply lines or connections. Barriers, dirt and other obstacles seriously reduce power output.

2. Buy a new turbocharger. Preferably an OEM grade turbocharger that performs just like your old turbo, but at a much better price! Better yet, get a turbocharger and installation accessory kit to make for a complete and thorough installation from start to finish.
