A brake amplifier is a device used to amplify the force applied to the brake pedal during the transfer of that force to the master brake cylinder. The braking systems that have them are often called “power brakes”.

Without the brake booster, we have to press harder than usual to get the brake system to work. Stopping distances will increase and emergency braking may not be as effective!

Power brakes are used in almost all cars with hydraulic brakes – you won’t see this in vehicles that use a compressed air system as the main braking circuit.
