Toyota Used Window Regulator

The window regulator or window mechanism helps to open and close the side windows of the vehicle.

Window Regulator

Nowadays, most cars are equipped with an electric regulator, which is controlled by the power window switch on the door or dashboard. Vehicles with basic equipment and older generation vehicles are usually controlled by a manual mechanism. In this case, the door is equipped with a door closer.

What are the parts of a window regulator?

The window regulator is installed inside the door under the window. It consists of a bracket that holds the glass in place and the mechanism itself. On some cars, this is a scissors-type mechanism, on others, a cable-operated window regulator.

This comes with either a window regulator or a manual window regulator, depending on your vehicle. In a scissor or gear driven regulator, the X-shaped part of the regulator effectively closes when the window is lowered.

When the window needs to be closed again, it will return to its normal position, pushing the window back up. When the bracket moves up and down, the door glass closes and opens accordingly.

How to Diagnose Window Regulator Problems

Sometimes problems can arise with the mechanism itself. Or, if you have power windows, with the electrical parts of the regulator. Getting to the bottom of the problem can be difficult. So if you’re unsure, do an inspection first so the mechanic can select the correct parts.

Extend life of window regulator

As with any mechanical item, there are several ways to extend the life of your power window as it ages with use and time. These are also areas that need to be double and triple checked when installing a new replacement power window or motor.

Lubricate all moving parts of the power window with spray lubricant. Spray Grease comes in a can and can be purchased at any local hardware store.

Check the outer window brushes or window sheets for damage. This will prevent rain, snow, ice, dirt and debris from entering the door.

Lubricate the window guides at the front and rear of the side glass. Smooth glass movement is essential for the long life of the power window. If the glass sticks, the window lift mechanism will undoubtedly break soon.

This may be taken for granted, but do not manually raise or lower the window. If any of these are needed, the power window regulator is most likely already damaged.
