In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head (often informally shortened to just the head) is located above the cylinders at the top of the cylinder block. It closes at the top of the cylinder, forming a combustion chamber. This connection is sealed with a head gasket. In most engines, the head also provides space for ducts that supply air and fuel to the cylinder and which allow exhaust gases to escape. The head can also be a place to install valves, spark plugs and fuel injectors.
Why you need cylinder head?
Inside the cylinder head there are passages called ports or paths through which the fuel-air mixture flows from the intake manifold to the intake valves, and exhaust gases from the exhaust valves to the exhaust manifold. In a water-cooled engine, the cylinder head also contains built–in channels for engine coolant – usually a mixture of water and antifreeze – to facilitate the removal of excess heat from the head and, consequently, the engine as a whole.
