BMW unveils the next-generation 5-Series sedan.
What’s going on?
BMW has just unveiled the new 5 Series 2017 sedan for everyone to see. Internally called the G30, it comes with a list of changes. We hope that these changes will affect the driving experience coming out of the 5th series.
So what’s new?
All. The 2017 BMW 5-Series G30 is largely new or improved in a way. Along with completely new mechanics comes the new version of BMW‘s infamous iDrive infotainment system.
Physically, the BMW 5 Series is bigger in every way. It is 1.2 inches longer, 0.3 inches wider and 0.6 inches taller than the current model – as if the 5 series is no longer too big. Part of the length increase comes from the wheelbase of 0.2 inches. Despite the increase in size, BMW engineers were able to save 137 pounds compared to a similar model. Torsional stiffness and overall body stiffness are also enhanced by reinforcement. For the first time, the BMW 5 Series is made entirely of aluminum. All of these changes are part of the latest BMW EfficientLightweight conceptual campaign.
There’s lots of new tech too
The 5th series is equipped with a number of new technologies thanks to the upgrade to iDrive 6.0. A lot of technology comes from the latest G11 and G12 BMW 7-series too. This includes the latest gesture control. This allows any of the front occupants to change certain functions by making certain hand gestures in the air from the center console.
Active steering is enhanced and works in tandem with xDrive all-wheel drive, if installed. To improve body control, BMW also introduced a new electromechanical anti-roll function with suspension. This is provided, if you select an adaptive drive and dynamic control of the shock absorber, basically adds an adaptive and active suspension.
